New York, NY -- Merit Software introduces Word Problem Shape-Up, a self-paced tutorial that encourages conceptual understanding of basic mathematical concepts. The program uses a step-by-step approach that is supported by clear and concise help messages. Its exercises focus on learning strategies for solving word problems with whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and percents.

Key features of the program include pre-tests, practice sessions, post-tests, and frequent places where students may print out work. In addition, the software seamlessly integrates into Merit's management utility, which automatically tracks multiple student results and creates reports that help teachers monitor user progress.

Word Problem Shape-Up is designed for students whose math scores place them at U.S. grade level 5.0 to 9.0, ages 10 and up. Reward sounds and graphics do not contain juvenile animations. Older students in ESL classes, adult literacy and GED prep programs, or college prep courses frequently use the software.

Word Problem Shape-Up is available in three sets, based on level of difficulty. A set of the single station version of the software, which includes multiple student tracking, is available for $79. Network, multi-station, and site licenses are also offered.

System requirements for the software are a computer running Windows 9x/NT/2000 with at least 13 MB of RAM and 13 MB of hard disk space. A sound card is also required.

An evaluation version of the program may be downloaded directly from our web site, http://www.meritsoftware.com/.

Merit Software publishes electronic media products that are effective in improving students' reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, writing, and mathematics skills.
