Ben Weintraub (212-675-8567) FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Merit Software Introduces Two New Programs To Develop Students' Basic Algebraic Thinking SkillsNew York, NY -- Merit Software introduces two new software programs that help develop students' algebraic thinking skills -- Pre-Algebra Shape-Up and Basic Algebra Shape-Up. The programs help students master specific basic algebra skills including: converting metric units, solving simple equations, reading line and bar graphs, performing operations with integers, creating formulas, and using ratios and proportions. Students advance through the program at their own pace. Each skill is introduced with a step-by-step tutorial. Contextual help and feedback are available throughout. After practicing, students explain concepts in a written portfolio. Key features of the programs include pre-tests, post-tests, and frequent places where students may print-out work. In addition, the software seamlessly integrates into Merit's management utility that automatically tracks multiple students results and creates reports that help teachers monitor user progress. The programs are designed for students whose math scores place them at a U.S. grade level of 6.0 to 9.0. Reward sounds and graphics do not contain juvenile animation. Older students in adult literacy and GED prep programs, or college prep courses will find the programs helpful. System requirements for the programs are a computer running Windows 9x/Me/NT/2000/XP with at least 8 MB of RAM, 120 MB of hard disk space, and a minimum screen resolution of 800 x 600 pixels. A sound card is also required. Pre-Algebra Shape-Up contains 450 problems and 1125 questions. A single station version of the software, which includes multiple student tracking, is available for $79. Basic Algebra Shape-Up contains 600 problems and 1500 questions. A single station version is available for $79.00. Network, multi-station, and site licenses are also offered.
