With Merit's online courses, teachers sharpen their skills and earn continuing education credits (CEUs) on their own schedule.
Courses include activities, resources, and discussion forums for communicating with colleagues. Courses are divided into twelve-week periods. Participants have flexibility but are expected to write a paper about their experiences using Merit with their students.
For an additional fee, teachers may earn three continuing education units from the Marshall University Graduate College for salary increase or licensing renewal purposes. Students' time on the software counts towards the successful completion of the course.
CURRENT COURSES:
(MPD001) Linking Curriculum, Literature and Technology
In this course, participants will explore how literature can support and supplement curriculum areas with upper elementary students. Participants will select one literary work covered in Merit Software's Book Punch collection and will learn how to use Book Punch to integrate reading and writing with meaningful project-based activities. Participants will also develop a technology-enhanced lesson plan to support at least one core curriculum area.
(MPD002) Teaching the Writing Process with Merit
With this course, middle school and high school teachers will learn how to use Merit Software's tools to teach the writing process within a realistic classroom environment. In addition, participants will learn implications for preparing students and for state writing assessments.
(MPD003) Differentating Instruction With Merit
Teachers will learn how to use Merit Software to determine important differences in students' points of entry. In addition, you will learn implications for working with students, both online and offline, and for creating fair and appropriate assessments.
