Students receive hands-on practice in using reading improvement strategies that sharpen their critical thinking skills and develop their ability to make inferences.

This software uses the same format as Developing Critical Thinking Skills for Effective Reading, with longer and increasingly challenging texts for the more advanced reader.

Assessments place students in appropriate units of instruction. Students advance as they demonstrate readiness. Scores are automatically kept in a record management system.

The questions, answers and explanations of the program can be spoken aloud by using the Merit Text Talker.

Designed for students in grades 8 through 11 (ages 13 and up), the software can also be used by English language learners and adult students.

  • Each set contains 60 passages and 600 questions.
  • Contextual help and feedback engage students of all ages.
  • Students choose from a menu of reward animations and sounds.
  • All student work is stored in the Teacher Program Manager.
  • Content can be spoken aloud by using the Merit Text Talker.

Students will...

  • Determine main idea of a text and select a logical sentence to introduce or complete it, or choose an appropriate title to identify it.
  • Identify the sequence of details in a text and select an additional supporting sentence that would logically fit in.
  • Draw an inference by recognizing information learned from the text that is not actually stated.
  • Determine the meaning of unfamiliar words by using other words or phrases in the text as clues.
