As students advance in grade levels they are expected to make a meaningful contribution to an academic discussion.
To do so, students must be able to interpret reading material for a purpose, which involves questioning, looking for intentions, and analyzing information.
However, many students enter higher grades unable to read critically. They fail to recognize an author's major points or understand how these points contribute to the coherence of the written piece. This inability to analyze makes it difficult for students to synthesize new information and restructure their ideas.
Furthermore, social elements discourage students from wanting to address these issues. It can be embarrassing for them to be in remedial classes. Students need to be taught critical reading skills in a way that boosts their confidence as learners, and provides the basis for understanding an author's message.
Reading skills software can be a great tool to accomplish these tasks. Particularly if the programs offer students constructive feedback and provide teachers with measurable results.
Merit Software reading skills programs were designed with these features in mind. Many teachers have reported that they have been effective in helping them teach critical reading in classroom and lab settings.

12 year old who needs reading and vocabulary help
I have a 12 year old (8th grade) who struggles in school. With alot of help from me, she is able to keep a low B average, but she wants better. She is active in school activities and is afraid her grades will someday affect that. We know that the problem is reading comprehension. She reads on a 4.6-5.2 reading level and her title one teacher says one of her problems is vocabulary. She scores below standards on her writing assesment test so I know her writing skills need attention. I have known of this problem for years and have struggled with what to do about it. The school is not overly concerned because she is only a little behind, so they are no real help. But the superintendent did some research for me and suggested I look into your software. I am thinking about ordering the 2005 Intermediate Skills Pack. What can you tell me about it. Also I am confused about the ordering information. I might like to call someone and order over the phone but is it cheaper to order online. Any information you can give me would be greatly appreciated. I have about made myself sick worrying about her reading. At sometime, the B's won't hold. We need help now. Thank You. Kim
