My son is an eleventh grader with a reading instructional level of 8th grade. Insufficient vocabulary. Looking for a lesson plan which incorporates vocabulary building and phonic awareness techniques.

From your description, it seems like Vocabulary Stretch and Vocabulary Super Stretch would be very useful for him.

Vocabulary Stretch and Vocabulary Super Stretch cover words commonly seen in academic texts.   It is self-paced, self-advancing.  Built-in descriptive feedback  support students while they work.  Scores are tracked in an easy-to-use management console.

Another Merit program that might be useful is Developing Critical Thinking Skills for Upper Grades.   It is a reading comprehension program with vocabulary-in-context exercises for each passage. It goes from a 8.0 – 11.0 grade equivalent reading level.
