They are Spanish speakers taking ESL courses, in a Latin country (Guatemala) they are working in a bilingual program that include subjects such as: Social studies and Language Arts, they really have problems with reading comprehension, specially I think they don’t like to read, as a cultural matter, and they don’t like to analyze the stories we read in class.



Merit Software has helped many ESL students improve their reading comprehension. Reading Shape-Up is probably the best program to start with. It helps students master specific reading skills: main idea, vocabulary, sequence, fact-opinion, factual recall, and inference. Students receive help and contextual feedback while they work through the program. It is written for students reading at a 3rd through 8th grade reading level. Also consider using Developing Critical Thinking Skills for Effective Reading. It helps students improve their reading comprehension and develops their ability to make inferences. It is designed for students who read at a 5th to 8th grade level.
