Merit Question and Answer
Accelerated Reader and Merit Software

QUESTION:

Area of Concern: Reading Comprehension
Submitted by: Parent
Grade Level: High School
Competency: Below Level
I am a parent of 2 teenagers. My two children are doing great in school. They are both in IB and get straight A's. I am, however, concerned about the 400 or so students that are barely reading above 8th grade level. I am interested in starting a program for the school that helps them. I spoke with the principal and he and I are working together to start a program over the summer to help boost these kids reading skills. I have worked with the Accelerated Reader program in elementary and middle school level. Is there any similar program that you have that helps jump start these kids with a reward type program or something to get them really interested in reading and make it fun as well? I am thinking of a book club type of program or reward as you advance. Some of these kids have no one at home who cares about education. Thanks.

ANSWER:

Thank you for contacting us.

First of all, I'd like to say that all of our reading programs can help these students. The foundation of all Merit Software programs is a step-by-step approach to understanding specific concepts, the encouragement of critical thinking, and interactive student lessons. Research shows that these techniques are effective in improving students' academic performance.

Merit Software gives also provides students a hands-on learning experience. Students see the immediate impact of their replies to questions. Often, they are given explanations for their responses, whether the answer is right or wrong, which increases their motivation and encourages them to go on.

For the students you mentioned I recommend Reading Shape-Up Set 2 and Developing Critical Thinking Skills for Upper Grades.
