My students are scheduled to take the state SOL's (exit examination) for Writing. They have minimal understanding of the subject matter. They operate best with hands on materials activities; however, worksheets are scarce and transparencies are expensive.
Several schools in Virginia have used Merit to help their students prepare for the SOL exit exam.
The two most popular programs for this purpose are Essay Punch and Grammar Fitness for Upper Grades. Essay Punch takes students step-by-step through the process of writing a basic essay. Grammar Fitness for Upper Grades helps students master common mistakes of English grammar. Both programs are self-paced and self-advancing. Students learn by doing, not watching or reading.
Student work for all Merit programs is stored in database that allows teachers to easily view and print scores.
