QUESTION:
Area of Concern: Reading Comprehension
Submitted by: Teacher
Grade Level: Elementary School
Competency: At Level
I am a resource room teacher and I teach math and ELA. I have 4th graders who are in need of comprehension skills and writing with main idea and details. The writing piece also includes organization and writing with a clear beginning middle and end. I have used different organizers, cut outs with matching main ideas to details, but I feel like I’ve hit a stop and don’t know what to do next. Any ideas for some creative lessons for comprehension and writing? Thanks!
ANSWER:
Merit’s reading comprehension and writing activities have helped many elementary resource room teachers help their students. Starter Paragraph Punch and Reading Skill Builder are two programs that have been particularly helpful.
Starter Paragraph Punch guides students step-by-step through pre-writing, organizing, editing, and publishing. Built-in prompts aid students while they write.
Reading Skill Builder finds gaps and provides instruction in specific reading skills that helps develop adept, capable readers. Concepts covered include – vocabulary, sequence, fact-opinion, factual recall, inference, and author’s purpose.
Both programs are 100% web-based and very easy to use and maintain.
