Merit Question and Answer
Improving writing instruction for boys

QUESTION:

Area of Concern: Process Writing

Submitted by: Teacher

Grade Level: Elementary School

Competency: Below Level

We just received our test scores and we are so pleased with the results! However, one thing that stood out to us was that over half of the number of students that did not pass the writing test were boys. (Our test consists of responding to a prompt and answering multiple choice questions.) Have other teachers been successful in sparking interest in writing for boys with your software? If so, what can you recommend? Thanks for your help!

ANSWER:

I recommend you consider using Starter Paragraph Punch and Open Punch with your students.

The Punch writing programs guide students step-by-step through the writing process. Prompts help students develop an idea, and create their own original work. Built-in tips and hints are available at every step of the way.

Boys (and girls) like the flexibility the Punch programs provide. They can write, within the bounds of reason, on topics they choose – sports, cars, movies, etc. Teachers can assign specfic topics, or you can do both.

Plus, all student writing is automatically stored in an online portfolio. Instructors are easily able to monitor, view, and comment on student work.
