14 year old male. School district says he should be in remedial program based on one test showing his performance at the 8th grade level with strong vocabulary skills. He is making A’s in all subject except language arts, in which it is a high B. I disagree that he needs a remedial program. What is your advice?
ANSWER:
Thanks for your inquiry. According to a recent study only 51% of U.S. High School graduates ready for college-level reading. Bearing this in mind, it probably couldn’t hurt to have your son use Merit at home to hone his skills.
Our most popular program for this purpose is Developing Critical Thinking Skills for Effective Reading for Upper Grades. The program helps students improve their reading comprehension and develops their ability to make inferences. It is designed for students who read at 8th through 11th grade levels. An easier version of the program is available for students reading between lower levels.
