Help Students Pass High School Exit Exam

Escalon High School employs Merit’s grammar software to improve students’ skills. It is used primarily to help high school students who are having trouble passing the high school exit exam. Students from grades 9 to 12 use the programs in a lab setting or with individual tutors. The teachers say that the students simply enjoy working on the computer with Merit Software.

Improve Middle School Reading Comprehension

Hampton Township Middle School’s reading support program for sixth and seventh graders gets students up to speed in specific reading skills. Students come in during study hall once or twice a week. Depending on the time of year, up to 15 students may be in the program.

Merit Software’s reading and vocabulary programs are used as an assessment, then as “eye – hand” work in specific cognitive concepts. The school also uses speed reading software and workbooks for instruction. Merit’s post-tests are used to validate student improvement.

Build Fourth Grader’s Writing Skills

A major emphasis in the school district is to improve students’ writing and grammar skills. The computer lab is used to provide activities towards that end. All fourth graders at the school use the computer lab at least once a week. During that time, students who used Writing Fitness improved their standardized test scores more than students who did not.

Grades 9 – 12 English classes at Rancho Cucamonga High School are improving their language arts skills with Merit Software’s Language Arts Bundle. These Merit programs serve as a supplemental reinforcement for in-class materials and strategies. First, students learn with workbooks and have class discussions. Afterwards, the software is used to see if students can apply their newly learned classroom knowledge.

Strengthen Adults’ Academic Skills

The Learning Lab at Cape Fear Community College provides students with personal tutoring and self-paced instructional software. These adult learners have a wide range of capabilities and interests. GED and developmental studies students use Merit reading, writing, and math software to enhance learning skills and strategies. At the beginning of each semester, students are brought into the lab and introduced to the programs. When they return for tutoring, many choose to work with the software rather than with tutors.
