Capable Resources for English and the Common Core

“Finding adequate Common Core resources is the main challenge looming over states’ efforts to prepare districts, schools, principals and teachers,” says Diane Stark Rentner, deputy director of national programs for the Center for Educational Progress.

This is where Merit fits in. For more than 25 years, Merit’s English Language Arts instructional programs have emphasized several key tenets found in the Common Core.

In addition to Merit’s strong track record of improving student test scores and providing engaging instructional activities for students, another important benefit is provided: Strategies incorporated in the software model many of the instructional process recommended in the Common Core and can help teachers become better teachers.

For instance, Merit writing programs teach students the process of writing not just narrative works, but informational and argumentative writings as well.

Merit grammar programs help teach the Common Core’s language progressive skills for grades 4 through 8.

Merit reading comprehension programs provide practice working with complex texts, and finding evidence within the text.
